"Take Me Home" Grooming Competition

A grooming contest to benefit shelter dogs in need of adoption. Contest categories and awards include:

Noon: By luck of the draw, dogs may be picked up at the Competition Arena. A
Competitor drawing any entry that exhibits any tendency of
aggressiveness may disqualify the entry and draw another dog from the
remaining pool.
1:30 PM: Competitor Set Up
2:30 PM: Pre-Judging
3:00 PM: Competition Begins
4:30 PM: Judging, Toy Entries
5:00 PM: Judging, Miniature Entries
5:30 PM: Judging, Standard Entries
6:30 PM: Reception & Awards
Size/Time Classifications:
Standard: over 15 inches tall at the shoulder; 2 1/2 Hrs.
Miniature: over 10 inches at the shoulder but under 15 inches; 2 Hrs.
Toy: 10 inches or under at the shoulder; 1 1/2 Hr.
Preparation Prior to the Contest:
15 dogs will be prepared (bathed/dried) by the Atlanta Humane Society staff, prior to
delivery to the Competition Arena. A “Handler” will accompany each dog provided by
the Atlanta Humane Society.
As Competitors will have access to the dogs at noon, additional “prep work” may be performed by the Competitor, at their discretion, up until time for pre-judging. All dogs should have ears cleaned and toe nails clipped prior to the competition.
For sanitary reasons, the genital and stomach areas can be pre-trimmed, according to the breed’s standard. The pads under the feet may also be trimmed.
With the exception of the preparatory work listed herein, all other trimming, rubber- banding and styling of the dog’s coat must be performed in the ring within the specified class time.
Bathing facilities are not available on-site.
Entry Requirement:
The application must be received and entry fee must be paid prior to contest. All participants must sign a copy of the rules prior to Check-In. Entry fees are not refunded for any reasons.
General:
All Competitors must have a minimum of three years’ grooming experience.
Competitors must dress professionally.
Competitors are reminded that they have agreed to accept the decisions of Judges as
final and binding.
Good sportsmanship is expected inside and outside the ring.
Check-in Procedure:
- All Competitors must complete the check-in procedures before entering the contest ring.
- Competitors must register at the Grooming Station Check-In desk at least 60 minutes prior to the start of the competition.
- Competitors who have not checked in one hour before the competition starts will not be allowed to compete and will forfeit their registration fee.
- Upon the completion of the check in procedures, Competitors will be assigned a work area to set-up
Set-up:
Set-up may begin immediately after Competitor completes the check-in procedure but must be completed no later than time shown for pre-judging.
Review of the Rules:
All Competitors must be at their tables in the ring 15 minutes prior to the competition start time. At this time, the contest procedures and rules will be reviewed by the Contest Coordinator.
Pre- and Post-Contest Photos:
Pre and post contest photos are mandatory and will be taken of each dog and of each entry with their grooming professional before and after the contest.
Competition Start Time:
All competitions will begin at 3:00 PM unless conditions exist beyond the control of the show promoter, the Luxury Pet Pavilion.
Grooming Techniques:
All grooming techniques using clippers, snap-on-combs, scissors and thinning shears are permitted.
Grooming Equipment:
Competitors must provide all of their own equipment, including grooming table, grooming arm and safety loop, which must be in good working condition and considered appropriate for use by a professional groomer.
Costumes, Decorations and Other Enhancements:
No bows, bandanas, or any other decoration or enhancement is allowed.
Professionalism in the Contest Ring:
Competitors must conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times.
Each Competitor must:
Adhere to the use of safe and gentle dog handling.
Have a professional attitude with the Atlanta Humane Society staff, the
Luxury Pet Pavilion staff, the AmericasMart staff, the panel of judges,
exhibitors, the viewing public, the media, as well as other Competitors.
Dress in proper grooming attire including appropriate shoes; and,
have safe and organized equipment and station.
Problems in the Ring During the Competition:
If a Competitor has a problem with a dog in the ring, they must alert the Contest Coordinator by raising their hand. The Competitor must never scream or yell; but, wait to discuss the particular situation with the Contest Coordinator.
Competition End:
Immediately after the announcement ending each class of competition, Competitors must stop all grooming procedures. Competitors should remove all hair, equipment and products from the grooming table. The Competitor should be ready to present their entry to the judging panel at that time.
Judging:
The judging panel will complete all judging within 20 minutes after the competition is over.
Awards and Prizes:
All awards, prizes and recognition will be announced and given out at the Awards Ceremony. Location: Saturday August 2, 2008, 6:30 pm to 7:30, Penthouse Theater, AmericasMart Bldg 3.
Disqualifications:
- Cruel and/or inhumane treatment of a dog.
- Late arrivals to the ring.
- Razor burning and/or injuring a dog.
- Leaving a dog unattended on the grooming table
- Rough handling techniques.
Strictly Prohibited:
Using visual or written grooming instructions.
Coaching by anyone, at any time, during the competition.
Using cell phones or radio transmitted devices.
Beverages that are not in spill proof containers.
